A mortal alchemist. A faerie king. A bond that transcends death.
Betrayed by a trusted mentor, Sylvie Imanthiya hides on the fringes of society, caring for half-fae orphans and trading her alchemical creations on the black market. She lives for the one night each season when she can see her dearest friend—a man whose destiny is far above hers.
King Taylan Ashkalabek knows better than to exchange halayda vows with a mortal. Even their friendship is a risk; love is an impossible dream. Then a brutal alchemical attack poisons his realm, unearthing a dark power within him—and leaving Sylvie with the ancient mark of Faerie’s savior.
Manifesting unpredictable abilities and aided by allies with their own secrets, Sylvie and Taylan journey into the wilds of Faerie to heal the damage and confront Casimir, an invincible star-fae determined to claim the realm as his own. But only their enemy knows Sylvie’s true capabilities—and Taylan’s weaknesses—and how to use them in his vicious schemes.
Her fate is life. His fate is death. With Faerie in the balance, Sylvie and Taylan must stand together before reality as they know it is destroyed.
I’m a huge cover lover and for fantasy I really prefer cover without people on them. So I just had to get my hands on this book 🙂 I mean, who can resist a beautiful dragonfly made of wires on a frontcover? And I really like when a story keeps secrets during the whole book and you dont know from the beginning why there is a dragonfly on there and whats her meaning.
The whole book I thought: Why on earth did the author use “Halayda” as a title? For me it was just a name you call your partner, something like honey – but in the end I found out the true meaning of the word and now Im so in love. <3
Sarah Delena White’s writing is so incredible and the world building is just amazing with all these plot twists and turning points you dont imagine. She creates magical places with words, so rich of color, you just want to live there. And all these creatures. I mean we don’t just meat faeries and other “typical” fantasy creatures. No, Sarah, shows us a world full of pookas, banshees, maithes, cuanns and so on. They are pictured so well in the story.
The side characters Diza and Zad are not just any strangers, they are married and acting this way. We get to know them quite well, even there past wasnt the best or shiniest they made there way and got on the good side. And damn, the villain made so much sense in the end, that I was confused for a short time, if it could even be possible that Sylvie and Taylan are wrong and the villains course is the right one. (Not ashamed for this. 🙂 I really can understand him, his feelings and his motives, after so many decades of trying so hard to make peace in a world, maybe I would do the same.)
It’s hard not to spoiler anything in this book, but I totally enjoyed Sylvie’s traits, her whole character is so amazing and she tries really hard. Sure you can’t always win, but I love that she isn’t giving up, even if it isnt about her home or her realm. She is just pur Life and with Taylan’s destructive magic the story behind this book makes so much sense to me and a story plot that values marriage and vows really high – totally loved this.
This book would work like a stand alone too, but now I’m so looking forward to read the sequel and hopefully it won’t be too long.
So many quotes in there I loved:
“I vow with all my heart to love you with the constancy of the sun, to protect you as the thorn protects the rose, to sustain you as a river in the wilderness, to stand beside you when all others desert. This is my promise to you, my halayda, until the world fades to nothing.”
If you love fantasy or fae or anything including magic just read this book. “Halayda” gets 5 ***** stars from me and I really recommend it to everyone out there. I’m sure you will enjoy it like I did.
