*Blurb:

In Croswald, the only thing more powerful than dark magic is one secret…

For sixteen years Ivy Lovely has been hidden behind an enchanted boundary that separates the mundane from the magical. When Ivy crosses the border, her powers awaken. Curiosity leads her crashing through a series of adventures at the Halls of Ivy, a school where students learn to master their magical blood and the power of Croswald’s mysterious gems. When Ivy’s magic––and her life––is threatened by the Dark Queen, she scrambles to unearth her history and save Croswald before the truth is swept away forever.

*My Opinion:

I just love everything in this book cover – the sparkling title with the crown stones in them and the wonderful illustration of the Hairies, little lightning creatures inside the lanterns.

„The Crowns of Croswald“ is full of so many creatures, magic stuff like dragons baking pie in there mouth, glanagerie bottles sending you straight into prepared illusions to practice magic and dont forget all the quills and scrivenist stuff. The world building is so amazing, loved the settings, the scenery descriptions and really great writing. What I really adored is the magic system, its totally unique to me.

We are following Ivy from her life as a scullery maid and secret sketching hours during the night to a brand new life as a scrivenist apprentice in the Halls of Ivy, a place she dreamt her whole life from. I really love Ivy’s curiosity, how she sees the world, but there isnt much more leading her way. No real internal conflicts, that let her grow.

It was a slow progress until I reached 50% of the book, then I got totally hooked and read the other half in one night. So the first half is quite slow paced, not a bad thing, but I had wished for a bit more action and not just boring school stuff and eating in dining halls. I would have loved more dialogues with Winsome the Scrivenist or her friends, she isnt asking many questions – thats a bit strange, her life got completely upside down, but it takes her a whole year to find out who she really is. I would have loved more informations about the world itself, the magic, the Dark Qeen and so on.

Im not a huge lover of too much romance in fantasy books, but here there was a bit of lacking, coz I really wished to find out more about her feelings for this boys. Thoughts or talking with her roomate, just anything and not at the end that she loves him, when she hadnt shared to much time with him.

Can’t wait to get the next book in the series and follow Ivy again through Croswald, this time with her Scrivenist and her friends to fight the Dark Queen.

*Conclusion:

If you are a huge fan of Harry Potter, boarding schools in general und royal princess stuff, then this book is totally for you. Oh and dont’t forget the dragon, hairies and the tons of pies 🙂 Who can resist all of this. I give this book 4 **** stars.
